As From Media grows, every new publication will begin with one local Founding Publisher. Not someone sent in from elsewhere — someone who cares deeply about the place they call home, and wants to help it thrive for years to come.
What is a Founding Publisher?
A Founding Publisher is the local steward of a From publication.
From Media provides the philosophy, brand, systems and ongoing support. The Founding Publisher brings what cannot be shared remotely:

Together, they create a publication that belongs to its community.
We’re looking for someone who:
- • Already calls the place home.
- • Plans to stay for years, not months.
- • Values relationships over reach.
- • Believes local businesses deserve long-term partnerships rather than advertising.
- • Reads our Editorial Promise and feels reassured, not restricted.
Publishing experience isn’t essential. A genuine commitment to the place and its people is.

We started From Viana for the people who had just arrived — and the people still deciding whether to come.
We watched newcomers fall in love with this town and still feel like guests in it. We wanted to help them move from living in Viana to belonging to it.
So we did something old-fashioned. We wrote about one town, every week, with care. We walked its coastline with our readers. We introduced newcomers to neighbours whose families had been here for generations. We partnered with local businesses — one per field, never advertising, always earned. And slowly, something happened that no feed can manufacture: people began to feel at home.
We’re telling you this because one day there will be a From Braga. A From Porto. Perhaps, in time, a From somewhere far from Portugal. And not one of them will be launched from a headquarters.
Every edition begins with one person who calls that place home. We call them a Founding Publisher — not a franchisee, not an operator, because we’re not selling territory. We’re entrusting a place.
Why must it be someone local? Because everything that makes this work is exactly what can’t be shipped. We can send you the brand, the philosophy, the partnership model, the document system, and every lesson Viana taught us — and we will, along with our ongoing support. What we can’t send is the part that matters: roots. Relationships. Your face becoming a familiar one. The trust of a town is earned in person, over years, or not at all.
We should be honest about what this asks of you. It’s slow. It’s writing on quiet weeks and showing up on rainy Saturdays. It’s years, not quarters. The town will know your name — which is wonderful, and also a responsibility you’ll carry to the café, the market, the beach. If that sounds heavy, it is. It’s also the best work we’ve ever done.
So — who are we looking for? Someone of a place, not passing through it. Someone who’d rather know a hundred neighbours than reach ten thousand strangers. Someone who reads our promise — partners support the publication, they never direct it; coverage is always earned — and feels relief, not restriction. Every edition inherits that principle. It isn’t negotiable, and the right person wouldn’t want it to be.
One more thing: we say town, even when it’s a city. That’s not the size of the place. It’s the size of the care.
